Dog and cat food distributors’ deadline is April 2010 to fulfill demands

2009. Colombian Agriculture and Livestock Institute, ICA, with resolution 3761 regulated dog and food bulk food in order to improve sanitary conditions for these products distribution in the country.
Luis Fernando Caicedo Lince, ICA general manager, pointed out that with surveillance and control, the Institute has verified that bulk sales are not following adequate parameters to guarantee risk reduction for animal health.
Among established requirements, it is demanded that the companies and their products have ICA registration.
One of the adopted measures to guarantee the product’s quality is the use of storage containers resistant to corrosion that must have sealing systems.
“Distributors obligations are to keep products registration, including amount and lot number, and they should be trained by producers in food handling and storage keeping follow-up and training registrations available to the Institute” said ICA general manager.
The high ranked official added that these products will be kept under surveillance by ICA that will accomplish studies to verify standards fulfillment.
Interested food distributors have until April 2010 to fulfill these demands; otherwise they could be sanctioned by sealing, seizing or distributor registration cancellation.
With this market regulation Colombia looks to start a process in which a lot of countries have advanced, looking their consolidation by accomplishment of sanitary requirements that guarantee their quality.
Once the deadline is met for measures adoption, ICA will supervise by visiting distributors.
Data of interest
In Colombia there are about 8.000 distributor stores of agriculture and livestock supplies.
Bulk sales category is more that 20 per cent of these products.
